“Who was that guy you were having a stare down with?” Caesar had asked him after the protest.
“Just some guy I wish know in Chicago. No one important.” That was a lie, and Huey knew it.
“No...that’s a lie. He was my best friend in Chicago before I moved to Woodcrest. I didn’t speak to him again until I went back to Chicago for a funeral. In retrospect, a part of me wishes it had been his funeral.”
“When I went back to Chicago, I found out we weren’t best friends anymore. He had some new guy...Dewy”
“You make sound like Cairo cheated on you with Dewy. A guy’s allowed to make new friends. Mr. Possessive.”
“It wasn’t that exactly. His new bestest friend in the whole wide world was a major douchebag and said I wasn’t revolutionary enough because of the way I was dressed and shit like that.” Huey’s faced was flushed with the hurt and anger of the past and took no notice when he stepped on dog waste.
“ Goddamn it!He and Dewy also made fun of me at the funeral, implying I was a sellout to whitey and shit like that. We got into a fight and I gave him a black eye.”
“A truly mature way to react.”
“I was ten. Anyway I tried to smooth things over and Cairo ended up breaking my nose. After that, he didn’t try to contact me and I didn’t try to contact him. Asshole.”
“You make it sound like you two went through a bitter breakup.”
“What really pisses me off is that he’s still hanging with that dumbass Dewy.”
“Which he surely did because he knew he would encounter you nearly 11 years later at a protest and wished to piss you off.”
“Huey, maybe you should make another appointment with Dr. McGruder if this is still bothering you.”
“Ceasar...he wasn’t just my best friend. He was practically my only friend in the whole damn world, even when I was in Chicago.”
A very telling statement.
“You’re not alone now Huey! You’ve got lots of friends now. Simone, Esther, Esther’s weird cousin Albie, Zeke, Ray, Rabbi Gold, that wiccan coven.”
Huey stared at ground dejected.
“Maybe I didn’t let him know how important his friendship was to me. Maybe that’s he never talked to me when I moved to Woodcrest.”
“Huey, I’m pretty sure this Cairo guy isn’t beating himself over this.”
Later, at a run down apartment
Cairo stared at album of childhood pictures and tried to ignore Dewy’s awful poetry.
